Premiere Pro gives you two native ways to sync separately recorded audio to video: Merge Clips, which pairs a video clip with its audio in the Project panel before you edit, and Synchronize, which aligns clips already sitting on your timeline. They match on different things, which is the detail that trips people up: Synchronize can analyze the audio waveform, while Merge Clips relies on timecode, markers, in and out points, or an audio track channel. Neither needs a plugin.
This guide covers both, when to use which, how timecode changes the job, and the real reason sync drifts on long takes even when you did everything right.
Why does audio need syncing at all?
Because good sound rarely comes from the camera. Dual-system recording puts a proper microphone into a separate recorder, which gives you clean dialogue but leaves you with two files that start at different moments. Syncing is the job of putting them back together, and the camera's own scratch audio is what most sync methods use to do it.
That last point matters more than it sounds: keep recording audio on the camera even when it is terrible. Waveform sync has nothing to match against without it, and a bad reference track is worth more than no track at all.
How do you sync audio and video with Merge Clips?
Merge Clips creates a single new clip that carries your video and your external audio together, before anything reaches the timeline. It is the cleanest option for narrative and interview work, because from then on you edit one clip instead of babysitting two.
Select the clips in the Project panel
Click the video clip, then Ctrl-click (Windows) or Cmd-click (Mac) the audio file or files that belong to it. This happens in the Project panel, not on the timeline.
Right-click and choose Merge Clips
The Merge Clips dialog opens with the synchronize point options. If Merge Clips is greyed out, you have either selected only one clip or included a clip that already contains merged media.
Pick your synchronize point
The dialog offers In Points, Out Points, Timecode (with an Ignore Hours option for devices whose hour value does not match), Clip Marker, and Audio track channel. Pick Timecode when your devices share it, or In and Out points when you slated manually.
If the option you want is greyed out, sync first
Clip Marker and Audio track channel grey out whenever the selected clips cannot support them, for example when there are no markers to match or the audio channels do not line up. Do not fight the dialog: put the clips on a timeline, select them, right-click and run Synchronize (that is where the audio waveform analysis lives), and once they are aligned you can merge or nest them from there.
Decide what happens to the camera audio
Tick Remove Audio From AV Clip to drop the camera's scratch track from the merged clip. Leave it unticked if you want to keep it as a reference or a backup channel.
Check the result before you cut
The merged clip appears in the Project panel with "Merged" in its name. Open it in the Source monitor and watch a moment with a hard consonant or a clap: lips and sound should land on the same frame.
Your original files are untouched. Merge Clips creates a new clip that references them, so nothing is destructive and you can always merge again with different settings.
When should you use Synchronize instead?
Use Synchronize when the clips are already on your timeline. Drop the video on one track and the external audio on another, select both, right-click, and choose Synchronize, then pick the same kind of sync point: Clip Start, Clip End, Timecode, Clip Marker, or Audio. Premiere shifts the clips until they line up in place. This is also the method to reach for when Merge Clips will not offer the sync point you need, because the Audio option here analyzes the waveforms rather than relying on matching channels or timecode.

How does timecode sync work, and when is it better?
Timecode sync matches clips by the time-of-day stamp your devices wrote into the files, so it does not care what the audio sounds like. When your camera and recorder share timecode, it is faster and more reliable than waveform matching, and it works even on silent takes where waveform sync has nothing to grab.
The catch is that timecode is only as good as the devices agreeing on it. Shared timecode means either jam-syncing your devices from one clock or using dedicated timecode hardware. Two devices simply set to the same wall-clock time are not timecode-synced in any useful sense, and their drift will show up over a long day.
- Use timecode when you have jam-synced devices, long takes, multi-camera shoots, or lots of quiet material.
- Use audio waveform when devices are unsynced but the camera captured usable reference sound. This covers most single-camera and small-crew work.
- Use markers or in points when both fail: slate the take, mark the clap in both files, and sync to the marker.
Why does audio sync drift or fail?
The frustrating one is drift: the take lines up perfectly at the start and is visibly off by the end. That is almost never a mistake in how you synced. It is two devices running on two slightly different clocks, so a recorder's "48 kHz" and a camera's "48 kHz" are fractionally apart and the gap accumulates across a long take.
Clock differences between devices. Sync in shorter chunks, cut and re-sync at scene breaks, or shoot with timecode hardware that keeps devices locked.
One device recording at 44.1 kHz and another at 48 kHz produces a steady, predictable offset. Set every device to the same rate before the shoot; it is the cheapest fix there is.
The camera track is too quiet, muted, or so heavily processed that it no longer matches the recorder. Sync to a marker or a slate instead, and record scratch audio next time.
Devices were never jam-synced, or one rolled over midnight. Fall back to waveform or marker sync for that take.
Footage interpreted at the wrong frame rate plays at the wrong speed, so sync cannot hold. Fix it with Interpret Footage before syncing, not after.
One habit prevents most of this: check sync at the end of a take, not the start. Anything can look right in the first ten seconds.
How do you sync a whole shoot at once?
Native sync handles clips a pair at a time, which is fine for a scene and painful for a full day of footage. If you are looking at dozens of camera files and a folder of recorder files, the job stops being creative work and becomes filing.
