What Pixl does
Pixl recreates the look of retro pixel art, the chunky pixels and limited colors of 8-bit games and old displays. It runs entirely on the GPU as a real After Effects, Premiere Pro, and DaVinci Resolve effect, so you get a live, render-accurate preview while you work, with none of the layer stacking or plugin chains the look usually takes.
Drop it on any clip and turn it into pixel art, setting the size of the pixels, locking to a retro palette, and adding dither and scanlines for an authentic screen feel, starting from a preset. Every control is animatable, so you can resolve the image from blocky to sharp or shift palettes across a shot.
How to use Pixl
Download Filmit Studio
Grab the free desktop app for Mac or Windows. It manages your whole Filmit library.
Install Pixl
Open the Filmit FX library inside Studio and install Pixl in one click.
Drop it on your clip
Pixl appears in your Effects panel in After Effects, Premiere Pro, and DaVinci Resolve. Drag it onto any clip.
Dial it in
Every control is live and keyframable, so tweak the look and animate it across your shot.
Dial in the exact look
Pixelate
Snap the image to a grid of big square pixels and set how chunky they get.
Palette lock
Force the colors into a fixed retro palette for a true 8-bit feel.
Color quantize
Cut the number of colors down to flat, banded tones like old hardware.
Ordered dither
Add a patterned dither so gradients break into the dotted shading of retro screens.
Scanlines
Lay horizontal scanlines over the picture for the look of an old display.
Presets
Start from a ready-made pixel style and adjust it instead of dialing it in from scratch.
