Die Hard-Inspired High-Contrast Tungsten Action

Inspired by Die Hard

Moody shadow pulls, punchy highlights, neon-adjacent coolness.

The Look

Tower Siege captures the late-80s, single-location action thriller signature: heavy contrast, deep blacks, and warm tungsten dominance from overhead office lighting. The grade is built for footage shot in interior spaces with mixed practical sources, where you want the warm light to dominate without losing the architectural structure of the shadows. Highlights push toward amber gold; blacks crush hard enough that figures emerging from doorways read as silhouettes; midtones hold the warmth of office practicals without going orange.

Inspired by Die Hard

Die Hard (1988) takes place almost entirely inside Nakatomi Plaza, lit by tungsten office overheads, monitor glow, and the occasional explosion. Jan de Bont shot it for contrast, letting blacks fall to true black so Bruce Willis emerging from a service shaft reads as a silhouette before a fireball. The high-contrast warm-tungsten signature became the template for the 80s and 90s action thriller, from Speed through The Rock.

Best For

  • Action and thriller narrative work
  • Interior location shooting with tungsten practicals
  • Office and corporate-set drama
  • Music videos with 80s or retro-thriller direction
  • Genre tributes and homage projects

Color Notes

These LUTs crush blacks aggressively. Lift the bottom of the curve in primaries if you need to recover shadow detail. The matte-bleached variants are forgiving on outdoor shots; the high-contrast variants need controlled interior lighting to hold up.
