Braveheart-Inspired Epic Landscape Grading

Inspired by Braveheart

Earthy greens, weathered contrast, epic-landscape grade.

The Look

Highland Freedom is the epic-landscape pack. Built for sweeping exterior footage, the grade pushes greens deep and earthy, lifts mid-shadows so distant terrain holds detail, and adds the kind of weathered contrast that gives stone walls, leather armor, and woad-painted faces the gravitas of historical drama. Saturation stays restrained on costumes and elevated on landscape: mountains, lochs, and overcast skies become the visual centerpiece. Built for any project where the location is a character.

Inspired by Braveheart

Braveheart (1995) was shot largely on location in Scotland and Ireland by DP John Toll. The grade leaned into the natural palette of the Highlands: muted greens, grey skies, slate-and-heather mountainsides. The cinematography influenced two decades of historical epic, from Gladiator through Kingdom of Heaven to The Northman.

Best For

  • Historical epic and period drama with significant exterior shooting
  • Travel content from Scotland, Ireland, Wales, or other Highland locations
  • Music videos with landscape-driven or mythological direction
  • Documentary covering pre-industrial or rural history
  • Anything where overcast natural light is the primary lighting plan

Color Notes

Bright daylight footage can over-saturate the greens. Pull saturation 10 percent if mid-day exteriors look too vivid. The matte variants suit dialogue and close work; the high-contrast variants are for trailers and wide landscape shots.
