How to Get a GIPHY API Key

A free GIPHY API key lets GIFer, ChitChat, and other Filmit plugins search and display GIFs. It takes about 2 minutes to set up.

Which plugins use this?

GIFer ChitChat

Step-by-step guide

1
Go to the GIPHY Developer Portal

Visit developers.giphy.com and click Get Started or Create an Account.

2
Create a GIPHY account

Sign up with your email (it's free). If you already have an account, just sign in.

3
Create an App

Once logged in, go to your Developer Dashboard and click Create an App.

  • Select API (not SDK)
  • App name: anything you like (e.g., "Filmit Plugins")
  • Description: anything (e.g., "For use with GIFer")
4
Copy your API key

After creating the app, you'll see your API key on the dashboard. Copy it.

5
Paste it into your Filmit account

Go to API Keys in your account settings (or Settings in Filmit Studio) and paste the key into the GIPHY field. Hit Save.

Done!

Your GIPHY key syncs across all your devices. Open GIFer in After Effects or Premiere Pro and start searching for GIFs.

Common questions

Is the GIPHY API free?

Yes. GIPHY's API is free for non-commercial use and most personal/small-business use cases. Their free tier allows up to 42 searches per hour and 1,000 per day.

Can I use one key for all plugins?

Yes. The GIPHY key is shared across all Filmit plugins that use GIFs. Enter it once and it works everywhere.

What if my key stops working?

You may have hit the rate limit. Wait a few minutes and try again. If it still doesn't work, generate a new key on the GIPHY Developer Dashboard and update it in your Filmit account.
