How to Fade to Black in Premiere Pro (The Cinematic Way)

The fade-to-black is the most fundamental transition in filmmaking. While applying a Dip to Black transition works, the cinematic approach uses opacity keyframes for precise control over timing and curve.

Watch the tutorial

Method 1: Quick (Dip to Black)

  1. Go to the Effects panel > Video Transitions > Dissolve > Dip to Black
  2. Drag it onto the end of your clip
  3. Double-click the transition to adjust duration

Method 2: Professional (Opacity Keyframes)

  1. Place a black color matte on a track below your video clip
  2. Select your video clip and open Effect Controls
  3. Keyframe Opacity from 100% to 0% over your desired duration
  4. Right-click the keyframes and select Ease In for a smooth, gradual darkening
Pro tip: The Ease In curve makes the fade accelerate at the end, feeling more natural than a linear ramp. Adjust the bezier handles in the Graph Editor for even more precise control.
